A grey, even sky over the water, with flat calm through the day with the barometer flat. Fish at Big Lake should hold close to the weed line and any gaps in it. The evening is where the day comes good. Change depth before you change anything else. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Set in Peace River Regional District, British Columbia, this is Big Lake. The surroundings are mixed forest. Roughly 77 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Bank access stretches around 4.3 km in total. Chetwynd is the closest place, 28 km off. It is 573 km to Edmonton, the nearest city. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Peace River Regional District cover mountain whitefish, longnose sucker and largescale sucker. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The shape of Big Lake decides where the fish sit.
Long-term averages put July at about 15°C and January near -12°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid April until roughly mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on Big Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Overnight stays are possible about 730 m out, where camping is mapped. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Beaver Lake at 3.5 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Big Lake locally before you travel.
