A closed sky with even light today, with flat calm through the day and pressure going nowhere. Give points where shallow meets deep the first hour at Baird Lake. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Out in Regional District of North Okanagan, British Columbia, sits Baird Lake. Height above sea level is 834 metres. Small at around 9 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Nearest town is Grindrod, 24 km off. It is 91 km to Kelowna, the nearest city. Close by you have: Hidden Lake 2 km away, Mabel Lake after 4.9 km, Elbow Lake 8.1 km away, Grassy Lake after 8.5 km and Holiday Lake 16 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Species logged across Regional District of North Okanagan include Coho salmon, sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon and rainbow trout. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Baird Lake that means starting tight and working out.
In an average year August sits at 16°C and January at -6°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early April and starts locking again about late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Plan around that when you fish Baird Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. You can camp 180 m off, which suits an early start. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Hidden Lake at 2 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing here settles the position at Baird Lake for certain.
