Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a light WNW breeze and pressure going nowhere. Wood Lake should fish best around reed fringes and open pockets today. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Wood Lake lies within the bounds of Lacombe County, Alberta. The water sits 940 metres up. This is sizeable water at about 1.51 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. Some 7.3 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. For supplies, Eckville is 8.8 km out. For a city, Red Deer is 47 km off. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Fish documented in Lacombe County include northern pike, walleye, yellow perch and brown trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. The near bank of Wood Lake is often the one people ignore.
Seasonal averages run from -12°C in January up to 15°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Wood Lake.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Sylvan Lake, 21 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the current arrangement for Wood Lake.
