A rough, wind-driven day, with mild air moving in from the WNW and the barometer holding steady. The productive water at Sylvan Lake will be around points where shallow meets deep. Quiet conditions all day, with the night marginally better. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Sylvan Lake is one of the Red Deer County waters in Alberta. The bank is 933 metres above sea level. At roughly 42.22 sq km it ranks among the larger waters in the region. The perimeter is close to 36 km, and wind can be flat in one arm and rough in the next. By surface area it heads our Red Deer County listings. Sylvan Lake lies 6.9 km from the water. Bentley is 14 km away, with Eckville at 15 km. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Red Deer County records list mooneye, Prussian carp, mountain whitefish, northern pike and walleye among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Sylvan Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Averages move between -12°C in January and 15°C in July. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Sylvan Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Wood Lake at 21 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Sylvan Lake before loading the car.
