A blustery day over the water, with an easy breeze from the WSW and the barometer holding steady. Wood Lake should fish best around the seam between weed and open water today. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Wood Lake is a County of Grande Prairie No. 1 water, in Alberta. The surface lies 644 metres up. It measures about 36 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 3.0 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The nearest place of any size is Grande Prairie, 5.1 km away. It is 384 km to Edmonton, the nearest city. A county boundary sits nearby, which can matter for local access rules.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County of Grande Prairie No. 1 records list longnose sucker, white sucker, largescale sucker, Arctic grayling and mountain whitefish among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Wood Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The year swings from about -14°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Count the season from break-up, usually mid April. From about mid April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. The season on Wood Lake rarely departs from it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Crystal Lake, 4.9 km away. What applies at Wood Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
