A day shaped by the wind, with a useful WNW wind pushing food about and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Wood Lake should come off the first drop-off and weed lines. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

You will find Wood Lake in Delburne, Alberta. The water sits 869 metres up. At about 32 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. For supplies, Stettler is 29 km out. Red Deer sits 48 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. In the same area: Mikwan Lake at 14 km, Goosequill Lake 17 km off, Alix Lake at 22 km, Pine Lake 26 km off and Parlby Lake at 27 km. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Wood Lake repays a walk before the first cast. After a blow, the windward bank is the one to try.
July runs about 16°C on average, January about -12°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Wood Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. It is recorded as intermittent, which means the basin empties in dry spells. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Mikwan Lake, 14 km away. Treat Wood Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
