A bright day with hardly any cloud, with just enough SE wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Start the search at Pine Lake along any hard bottom among the soft. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Pine Lake is set in Red Deer County, Alberta. The bank gives way to pine and birch. The water covers around 3.99 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. The shoreline runs about 20 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Head to Penhold, 30 km away, for anything you forgot. Springbrook is 32 km and Red Deer 32 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Red Deer County: mooneye, Prussian carp, mountain whitefish, northern pike and walleye. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Pine Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Between January at about -12°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. Expect the water usable from around mid April until roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Pine Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A ramp is mapped within 420 m. Boat Launch Area gives parking 430 m away. A pier or jetty stands 290 m away, which helps on a crowded bank. There is a toilet block some 770 m out. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lakeview Lake sits 11 km off and takes the overflow. For Pine Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
