Virl Lake near Jasper: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Virl Lake sits in Jasper, out in Alberta. Lake country bush runs right down to the water. Small at around 4 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Jasper list. Jasper at 10 km is the nearest place to stop. Kamloops is the closest city, 285 km away. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.

• Where to Fish on Virl Lake

  No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Jasper, recorded fish include rainbow trout, longnose sucker, brook trout and bull trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Fish Virl Lake to its features, not to its size.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Average temperature peaks around 12°C in July and bottoms out near -10°C in January. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. On average, early May opens the water and early November closes it again. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them.   We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Dorothy Lake, 0.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback.
