Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the S and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Cabin Lake should come off reed fringes and open pockets. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Cabin Lake falls in Jasper, part of Alberta. The water sits 1,223 metres up. The water covers some 34 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 2.9 km, and most of it is walkable. It is among the larger waters listed here for Jasper. Jasper sits 3.4 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Jasper Park Lodge at 5.1 km and Hinton at 68 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Jasper, recorded fish include rainbow trout, longnose sucker, brook trout and bull trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Cabin Lake decides where the fish sit.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 13°C, while January sits near -10°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. The season on Cabin Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Mina Lake sits 1 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm before you fish Cabin Lake.
