Overcast skies today, with an easy breeze from the S and steady pressure. The fish at Riley Lake are likely to sit near points where shallow meets deep. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

Riley Lake is one of the Jasper waters in Alberta. Around the bank it is lake country bush. About 6 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Jasper lies 3.1 km from the water. Then Jasper Park Lodge, 4.3 km, and Hinton, 67 km. Other water nearby: Mina Lake at 1.1 km, Patricia Lake just 1.4 km, Cabin Lake at 1.8 km, Hibernia Lake just 2.9 km and Marjorie Lake at 2.9 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Jasper records list rainbow trout, longnose sucker, brook trout and bull trout among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Riley Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages here run 13°C at the top of summer and -10°C at the bottom of winter. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Expect Riley Lake to follow that timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Mina Lake, 1.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Riley Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
