A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a light chop building from the SE with a settled glass. Most of the action on Trowel Lake should come off the first drop-off and weed lines. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Give the likely spots time before moving. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

You will find Trowel Lake in Hay Lakes, Alberta. Everything around it is mixed forest. It runs to roughly 34 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 3.6 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Supplies mean a trip to Camrose, 24 km off. Then Millet, 26 km, and Wetaskiwin, 28 km. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. At Trowel Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes. Weed gaps hold fish when the beds themselves are too thick.
Averages move between -14°C in January and 16°C in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Anyone fishing Trowel Lake regularly works to that calendar.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. It is recorded as intermittent, which means the basin empties in dry spells. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Louis Lake at 1.6 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Trowel Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
