A crisp, open sky after dark, with light air out of the SW and pressure sitting still. Activity on Sounding Lake should centre on windblown banks where food collects. Save your energy for the night. Change depth before you change anything else. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

You will find Sounding Lake in Kananaskis Improvement District, Alberta. The bank is 1,653 metres above sea level. About 2 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. It is a small entry by Kananaskis Improvement District standards. Canmore sits 47 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Turner Valley at 58 km and Black Diamond at 62 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Kananaskis Improvement District records list mountain whitefish, brook trout, brown trout, longnose sucker and white sucker among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Sounding Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
August runs about 11°C on average, January about -11°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid May. Open water usually runs from mid May until about early November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. The season on Sounding Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. The nearest mapped parking is 660 m away, so the last stretch is on foot. Mapping records toilets within 700 m. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Rockwall Lake, 0.9 km away. Confirm before you fish Sounding Lake.
