Cloud coming and going through the night, with mild air moving in from the WSW and pressure going nowhere. Snake Lake should fish best around the shallows early and the drop later today. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient.

Snake Lake is one of the Improvement District No. 24 waters in Alberta. Boreal forest runs right down to the water. Surface area runs to some 10.93 sq km, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. Shoreline length is close to 21 km, and each section fishes a little differently. The town to know is Fort Smith, 131 km out. Hay River is 156 km and La Crête 211 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Improvement District No. 24 include goldeye, northern pike, walleye, cisco and Iowa darter. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Anyone new to Snake Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Averages move between -22°C in January and 16°C in July. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly early November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Snake Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Kilome Lake sits 26 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Snake Lake before loading the car.
