Glare on the water under a clear sky, with calm air over the water and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Lys Lake should be near windblown banks where food collects. A long productive spell runs morning through afternoon. Make the first hour count and build on it. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Lys Lake sits in Municipal District of Pincher Creek No. 9, out in Alberta. Elevation runs to 2,103 metres. Small at around 7 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. The nearest place of any size is Pincher Creek, 36 km away. Further out sit Blairmore (41 km) and Coleman (46 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name rainbow trout, white sucker, Iowa darter, bull trout and california golden trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Lys Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Between January at about -10°C and August at about 12°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid May. Climate averages put the opening at about mid May and the closing near early November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Lys Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. North Scarpe Lake at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. For Lys Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
