Strong air moving over the water all day, with calm air over the water with a settled glass. Start the search at Leech Lake along any hard bottom among the soft. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Leech Lake sits in Woodlands County, out in Alberta. Height above sea level is 746 metres. This is sizeable water at about 2.10 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. With 5.9 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Some 19 km away sits Mayerthorpe, the nearest settlement. Edmonton is the closest city, 133 km away. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Woodlands County include yellow perch and fathead minnow. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Read Leech Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Long-term averages put July at about 15°C and January near -15°C. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Leech Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. Sort the permit out before you load the car. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Should this one be busy, Dolberg Lake is 14 km off. Nothing on Leech Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
