A blustery day over the water, with a kind W breeze on the water and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Bear Lake should be near the weed line and any gaps in it. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today.

The County of Barrhead No. 11 end of Alberta holds Bear Lake. Everything around it is taiga. Surface area is around 77 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. With 5.8 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. For a base, Barrhead sits 32 km out. For a city, Edmonton is 119 km off. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across County of Barrhead No. 11 include northern pike, white sucker, brook trout and Iowa darter. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Anyone new to Bear Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The range across the year is -16°C to 16°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Bear Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The water borders Bear Lake Natural Area, so reserve rules are likely to apply. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Should this one be busy, Clear Lake is 5.6 km off. Check the position at Bear Lake before loading the car.
