Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a soft SW wind and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Lake Merlin should be near the shaded margin through bright spells. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Lake Merlin lies within the bounds of Improvement District No. 9, Alberta. What surrounds it is mixed forest. It measures about 30 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Roughly 2.8 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Lake Louise is the closest place, 11 km off. For a city, Calgary is 150 km off. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Improvement District No. 9, recorded fish include brook trout, bull trout, cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Lake Merlin the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Expect August near 10°C and January near -14°C on the long-run figures. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late May. The open-water window runs from around late May to about late October in an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On Lake Merlin the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Castilleja Lake, 1.2 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Lake Merlin for certain.
