Hidden Lake near Lake Louise: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Improvement District No. 9, Alberta, is where Hidden Lake sits. Land around it is lake country bush. Roughly 10 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Around 1.2 km of margin, front to back. Lake Louise lies 8.2 km from the water. Banff is 51 km away, with Golden at 63 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.

• Where to Fish on Hidden Lake

  Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Fish documented in Improvement District No. 9 include brook trout, bull trout and cutthroat trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Hidden Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Seasonal averages run from -14°C in January up to 10°C in August. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late May. From about late May to around early November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It sets the rhythm of the year at Hidden Lake.

• Tackle & Baits

  Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. You can camp 1.2 km off, which suits an early start. There is a toilet block some 1.4 km out. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else.
