A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a firm SW blow with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Lake Dene is the calm side of the wind. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lake Dene is one of the Improvement District No. 24 listings for Alberta. The bank is 243 metres above sea level. This is sizeable water at about 1.73 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. There is roughly 5.5 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. La Crête at 181 km is the nearest place to stop. Fort Smith follows at 198 km, then Fort McMurray at 218 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name goldeye, northern pike and walleye. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Lake Dene the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -22°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about early November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Time your trip to Lake Dene by conditions rather than dates.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Mink Lake, 20 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Lake Dene for certain.
