A crisp, open sky after dark, with enough SW wind to stack food downwind and pressure sitting still. Johnson Lake should fish best around sheltered bays and points today. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Johnson Lake is one of the Improvement District No. 24 waters in Alberta. Height above sea level is 218 metres. Around 78 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Around 3.9 km of margin, front to back. Nearest place of any size is Fort Smith, 193 km away. Then Fort McMurray, 200 km, and La Crête, 208 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Species logged across Improvement District No. 24 include goldeye, northern pike, walleye, cisco and Iowa darter. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Fish Johnson Lake to its features, not to its size.
The year swings from about -22°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly early November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Johnson Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lake Dene, 27 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm before you fish Johnson Lake.
