Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a faint SSW drift and pressure sitting still. Whatever swims in Hutch Lake should be near the shaded margin through bright spells. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Mackenzie County, Alberta, is where Hutch Lake sits. The bank is 325 metres above sea level. It measures some 6.14 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. At about 25 km of edge, most people fish a single area and learn it well. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Alberta listings. High Level is the closest place, 29 km off. Edmonton sits 626 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public occurrence data for Mackenzie County names longnose sucker, northern pike, Arctic grayling and goldeye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Hutch Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -21°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. From about late April to around early November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. At Hutch Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Being dammed, it draws down in some seasons and fills in others. A campsite lies 380 m away for anyone staying over. A picnic area is mapped about 650 m away. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. For a change of water, Footner Lake is 18 km distant. Confirm access to Hutch Lake locally before you travel.
