Clear overhead with good moonlight, with a gentle ripple from the SW and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Child Lake should come off shallow cover and weed edges. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Child Lake lies in Mackenzie County, in Alberta. The ground around here is northern bush. Surface area is around 46 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Our Mackenzie County list holds plenty of bigger water. The closest town, High Level, is 32 km distant. After that come La Crête at 36 km and Manning at 186 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Mackenzie County include longnose sucker, northern pike and Arctic grayling. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Child Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -22°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about early November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Child Lake around it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records show it does not hold water year-round. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Surette Lake, 17 km out. Confirm access to Child Lake locally before you travel.
