Dull, settled light over the water, with the surface near flat and steady pressure. Give the margins and the shelf beyond them the first hour at Horse Lake. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Horse Lake lies within the bounds of Wood Buffalo, Alberta. Height above sea level is 583 metres. Around 25 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. There is roughly 3.3 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. On size it sits at the modest end of our Wood Buffalo list. Fort McMurray is the closest town at 74 km. Wabasca-Desmarais follows at 120 km, then Lac La Biche at 153 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Open biodiversity records for Wood Buffalo list longnose sucker, Arctic grayling, white sucker and mountain whitefish. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Fish Horse Lake to its features, not to its size.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -20°C in January. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. The season on Horse Lake rarely departs from it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Mariana Lake sits 22 km off and takes the overflow. Treat Horse Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
