Set in Westlock County, Halfmoon Lake is an Alberta water. Elevation runs to 612 metres. With some 76 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline length is close to 7.7 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Gibbons lies 25 km from the water. Bon Accord is 26 km away, with Morinville at 35 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Survey and observation records for Westlock County include northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. The near bank of Halfmoon Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -16°C on the long-run figures. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Plan around that when you fish Halfmoon Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is camping recorded roughly 350 m off. Halfmoon Lake Natural Area covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Taylor Lake at 7.8 km is the nearest alternative. Ask locally about Halfmoon Lake if anything is unclear.
