Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a kind SSW breeze on the water and steady pressure. The productive water at Grass Lake will be around the weed line and any gaps in it. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in County of Athabasca No. 12, Alberta, this is Grass Lake. What surrounds it is boreal forest. With some 14 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Roughly 2.1 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. The closest town, Athabasca, is 27 km distant. Then Westlock, 47 km, and Barrhead, 72 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name yellow perch, white sucker, northern pike, longnose sucker and walleye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Read Grass Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -16°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Grass Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. This one is mapped as intermittent, so a wasted trip is a real risk in a dry year. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. George Lake at 2.8 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Grass Lake before loading the car.
