An even grey lid over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the SW with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Bleak Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

County of Athabasca No. 12 in Alberta is where Bleak Lake sits. Everything around it is northern bush. It measures some 2.15 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. Some 6.3 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. The closest town, Athabasca, is 13 km away. Westlock follows at 64 km, then Barrhead at 85 km. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Reported across County of Athabasca No. 12: yellow perch, white sucker, northern pike and longnose sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. On Bleak Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Averages here run 16°C at the top of summer and -16°C at the bottom of winter. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan around that when you fish Bleak Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Hanlon Lake at 11 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm access to Bleak Lake locally before you travel.
