Moonlight in and out behind the cloud tonight, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW with a settled glass. Currie Lake should fish best around the calm side of the wind today. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Currie Lake sits within Wood Buffalo in Alberta. Everything around it is mixed forest. Roughly 1.67 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. With 9.4 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It lies lower than most water we list in Alberta. Supplies mean a trip to Fort McMurray, 153 km off. Fort Smith lies 226 km off, Buffalo Narrows another 280 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Wood Buffalo include longnose sucker, Arctic grayling, white sucker, mountain whitefish and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Read Currie Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Averages move between -21°C in January and 17°C in July. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near early November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Currie Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Larocque Lake at 7 km is the sensible second choice. Signs at Currie Lake carry more weight than any list.
