A grey, even sky over the water, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with the barometer flat. The productive water at Blefgen Lake will be around the shallows early and the drop later. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Blefgen Lake is a Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124 water, Alberta side. Northern bush runs right down to the water. At 2.58 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. With 8.3 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Athabasca lies 42 km from the water. The big place round here is Edmonton, 147 km distant. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124 include northern pike, cisco, Arctic grayling, walleye and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. On Blefgen Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Seasonal averages run from -16°C in January up to 15°C in July. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Anyone fishing Blefgen Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. The nearest alternative is Spotted Horse Lake, 8.3 km out. None of that is settled for Blefgen Lake in what we hold.
