A hard blow across the water today, with a decent WNW wind working the banks and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Blackfoot Lake around the shallows early and the drop later. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Strathcona County in Alberta is where Blackfoot Lake sits. It lies 705 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 79 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The perimeter runs near 11 km, so plan the walk before you start. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Strathcona County. The closest town, Tofield, is 19 km distant. Beyond it, Ardrossan at 23 km and Lamont at 27 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Strathcona County, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch, cisco, rainbow trout and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Blackfoot Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Between January at about -14°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Blackfoot Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapped as intermittent, it fills after rain and shrinks between. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Flyingshot Lake sits 4 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position at Blackfoot Lake before loading the car.
