Hard light and clear air over the water, with a light chop building from the SE with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Bearhills Lake around any hard bottom among the soft. A long productive spell runs afternoon into evening. Make the first hour count and build on it. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Alberta holds Bearhills Lake, in County of Wetaskiwin No. 10. Everything around it is rolling bush. At some 4.83 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. You have roughly 32 km of edge to choose from, which rewards a scouting trip. Wetaskiwin lies 17 km from the water. Millet is 20 km away, with Ponoka at 29 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 include yellow perch, walleye, northern pike and white sucker. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Bearhills Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Averages move between -12°C in January and 16°C in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about mid April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Bearhills Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. The nearest alternative is Watelet Lake, 13 km out. For Bearhills Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
