A grey, even sky over the water, with a busy WSW wind on the open water and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Lake Elingamite should come off the shallows early and the drop later. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient.

Set in Corangamite, Victoria, this is Lake Elingamite. Everything around it is dry hill. At 1.80 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. The bank runs in an even curve, so features come from what lies under the surface. 6.3 km away sits Cobden, the nearest town. The big place round here is Ballarat, 114 km distant. This one is safely inside the regional boundary.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Records collected within a few miles name perch, goldfish and brown trout. Presence in the area does not guarantee a fish in this exact water on the day. At Lake Elingamite light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Seasonal averages run from 9°C in July up to 18°C in February. Temperatures stay workable through the cold season. Spring runs September to November and autumn March to May, and both fish well. Early spring brings the water on quickly here. On Lake Elingamite the same rules apply, with local timing.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Overnight stays are possible about 660 m out, where camping is mapped. Reserve land runs up to the bank here, so read the notices. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lake Mumblin sits 9.2 km off and takes the overflow.
