Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a gentle ripple from the ESE with a settled glass. Most of the action on Lake Colongulac should come off points where shallow meets deep. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. A spring day: afternoons beat mornings while nights stay cold.

Lake Colongulac is one of the Corangamite listings for Victoria. Land around it is dry hill. It covers about 14.23 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. The perimeter runs near 22 km, so plan the walk before you start. Few waters listed in Corangamite are bigger. Camperdown sits 6.8 km from the bank. Then Cobden, 19 km, and Terang, 22 km. This one is safely inside the regional boundary.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open occurrence data for the surrounding area lists Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and perch. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Lake Colongulac fishes better once you know its edges.
Expect February to average close to 19°C, with July the cold end at about 9°C. Cold never closes this one. Levels swing with the wet season, which moves the fishing about. June through August is cool but far from dead. On Lake Colongulac that shapes the whole year. Early and late in the day beat the middle for most of the year.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Lake Kariah sits 4 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Lake Colongulac may have changed since it was mapped.
