Flat light and a covered sky today, with steady pressure of wind from the WSW and pressure ticking upward. On Lake Colac, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Pre-summer fish are feeding up and mobile.

You will find Lake Colac in Colac Otway, Victoria. The water sits 115 metres up. It covers about 27.29 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. With 24 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It is the biggest water on our Colac Otway list. The town to know is Colac, 3.9 km out. Further out sit Elliminyt (7.5 km) and Winchelsea (34 km). One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Documented catches and surveys in the area cover common carp, shortfin eel and perch. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Work Lake Colac in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Averages move between 9°C in July and 19°C in February. Cold never closes this one. Spring, September into November, and autumn, March into May, are the strong stretches. The wet months move levels about, which shifts the fishing with them. At Lake Colac the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Lake Ondit, 5.5 km out. Signs at Lake Colac carry more weight than any list.
