A still, cloudless night on the water, with a consistent blow out of the SE with a settled glass. On Lake Ayrey, work reed fringes and open pockets first. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The spring warm-up puts fish on the sunny banks.

Within Colac Otway, Victoria, you have Lake Ayrey. Country round the bank runs to oak and grass. Colac is the closest town at 16 km. It is 55 km to Geelong, the nearest city. Water in the same corner: Lake Burn near enough 3 km, Lake Colac a touch under 14 km, Lough Calvert near enough 15 km, Lake Ondit a touch under 15 km and Lake Beeac near enough 17 km. Rules can differ a short way off, since the regional boundary is near.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Biodiversity records within roughly six miles include brown trout, shortfin eel and perch. Take it as evidence of what swims here, not a promise for one session. On Lake Ayrey the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in February and bottoms out near 9°C in July. Temperatures stay workable through the cold season. Spring, September into November, and autumn, March into May, are the strong stretches. Spring, September into November, fishes hardest, with autumn a close second. On Lake Ayrey the same rules apply, with local timing.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Lake Ayrey Wildlife Reserve (no hunting) covers ground next to the water; its rules will apply on that side. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Lake Burn at 3 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Lake Ayrey as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
