Overcast skies today, with hardly a ripple anywhere with a settled glass. The water to cover at Purnong Lagoon is drains and drop-offs on the tide. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Pre-summer fish are feeding up and mobile.

In South Australia, Purnong Lagoon belongs to Mid Murray. This is scrub and brush ground. This is sizeable water at about 1.01 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. Shoreline length is close to 5.5 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Ground here is low by South Australia standards. Mannum sits 31 km from here and is the nearest stop. Murray Bridge is 44 km away, with Tailem Bend at 46 km. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. The channel is where water moves, and fish follow it. Oyster and old piling give the only hard structure in sight. Open occurrence data for the surrounding area lists common carp, golden perch and goldfish. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Purnong Lagoon the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The year swings from about 10°C in July to roughly 23°C in February. There is no cold season worth the name. Spring, September into November, and autumn, March into May, are the strong stretches. The shoulder seasons either side of summer are the ones to aim for. On Purnong Lagoon the same rules apply, with local timing.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Maidment Lagoon is 5.5 km off. Check the current arrangement for Purnong Lagoon.
