Lake Ada in Kangaroo Island: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

  Lake Ada is a Kangaroo Island water, South Australia side. This is pine and hardwood country. The water covers some 95 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Around 3.5 km of margin, front to back. Kingscote sits 40 km from the bank. Normanville follows at 103 km, then Sellicks Beach at 119 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.

• Where to Fish on Lake Ada

  No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Lake Ada gives up its fish to patience rather than distance. Overhanging branches shade fish that would otherwise sit deeper.

  Typical February readings run about 20°C; by July the average is down near 11°C. Winter here means light layers, not lost months. The shoulder seasons either side of summer are the ones to aim for. Summer, December to February, brings heat, so fish early and late. That is the shape of the year on Lake Ada.
