Overcast skies today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NNE and a falling glass. On Squirrel Lake, work bays that hold the day's warmth first. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Squirrel Lake stands in Sublette County, Wyoming. The bank is 9,872 feet above sea level. Small at around 9 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Sublette County. Lander sits 19 miles from the bank. Fort Washakie follows at 23 miles, then Ethete at 27 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Sublette County records list brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout and white sucker among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to Squirrel Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate records put July near 51°F and January near 17°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Look for the thaw near early June; the fishing lifts straight after. The lid tends to go about early June and return around early November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Squirrel Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Poison Lake sits 1.9 miles off and takes the overflow. The position on Squirrel Lake is worth confirming on the day.
