Heavy overcast holding through the day, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure ticking upward. The water to cover at Rye Pond is whatever cover the water offers. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

The Park County end of Wyoming holds Rye Pond. The bank is 6,168 feet above sea level. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. Our Park County list holds plenty of bigger water. West Yellowstone sits 29 miles from here and is the nearest stop. Big Sky is 40 miles away, with Livingston at 49 miles. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Park County records list brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and black-spotted cutthroat trout among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Anyone new to Rye Pond should walk it once before setting up.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 58°F, while January sits near 15°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Expect Rye Pond to follow that timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Recorded parking is half a mile off, far enough to travel light. Facilities include toilets around half a mile from here. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Slide Lake at 3 miles is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Rye Pond as something to verify.
