Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with an easy breeze from the SW and the barometer holding steady. On Rush Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. Save your energy for the evening. Work the productive water thoroughly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Rush Lake lies in Teton County, Wyoming. The ground around here is pine and birch. At roughly 2 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. On size it sits at the modest end of our Teton County list. You are 15 miles from West Yellowstone. For a city, Billings is 141 miles off. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Teton County cover mountain whitefish, lake trout, Utah sucker and brown trout. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Rush Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
In an average year July sits at 56°F and January at 14°F. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Plan around that when you fish Rush Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. You will be walking about half a mile from the nearest car park. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Feather Lake sits 1.3 miles off and takes the overflow. Where Rush Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
