Overcast skies today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NNW and a falling glass. Fish at Moraine Lake should hold close to the margins and the shelf beyond them. The evening should out-fish the rest of the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Moraine Lake is one of the Sublette County waters in Wyoming. Pine and birch runs right down to the water. The water covers some 143 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 2.4 miles, and most of it is walkable. Size puts it in the front rank of our Sublette County list. Fort Washakie is the closest town at 23 miles. Further out sit Pinedale (28 miles) and Ethete (29 miles). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Sublette County include brook trout, rainbow trout and brown trout. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Moraine Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Long-run averages give July about 48°F and January about 14°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid June. The lid tends to go about mid June and return around late October. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Expect Moraine Lake to follow that timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. The nearest alternative is Lake Polaris, 0.9 miles out. Confirm before you fish Moraine Lake.
