Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with just enough WSW wind to ripple the surface with a softening glass. On Frye Lake, work the seam between weed and open water first. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Frye Lake lies within the bounds of Fremont County, Wyoming. The surface lies 8,514 feet up. Around 120 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. Roughly 2.3 miles of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Few waters listed in Fremont County are bigger. Start from Lander, 11 miles down the road. The nearest city of size is Salt Lake City, 206 miles away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Survey and observation records for Fremont County include brown trout, rainbow trout and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Frye Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Temperature averages peak at 57°F in July and bottom out at 19°F in January. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Winter locks it down, and mid May brings it back. Break-up near mid May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Frye Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows parking within half a mile. There is a campsite half a mile from the water. Toilets show in mapping about half a mile away. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Worthen Meadow Reservoir, 2.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. What applies at Frye Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
