A mixed sky through the night, with calm air over the water with the glass slipping lower. Activity on Aster Lake should centre on points where shallow meets deep. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Aster Lake lies in Teton County, Wyoming. The surroundings are mixed forest. It covers about 15 acres, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. 37 miles away sits West Yellowstone, the nearest town. After that come Ashton at 47 miles and Driggs at 48 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Teton County, recorded fish include mountain whitefish, lake trout and Utah sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. The shape of Aster Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
July runs about 53°F on average, January about 13°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid May. Expect the water usable from around mid May until roughly early November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Aster Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lewis Lake, 3.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback.
