Hard light and clear air over the water, with mild air moving in from the SSW with a softening glass. The productive water at Moose River will be around undercut banks and deeper glides. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Out in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, sits Moose River. The surface lies 1,365 feet up. Nearest town is Little Round Lake, 17 miles off. Further out sit Hayward (22 miles) and Park Falls (28 miles). Within a short drive: Snag Lake the better part of 2.7 miles, Burd Lake at about 4.4 miles, Black Lake the better part of 4.4 miles, Fawn Lake at about 4.8 miles and Venison Lake the better part of 5 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. The outside of each bend cuts deepest and holds the better fish. Log jams gather bait and everything that eats it. County-wide records name walleye, brown trout, largemouth bass, muskellunge and northern pike. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Moose River should walk it once before setting up.
The range across the year is 9°F to 66°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Cold months ice the margins and pools; moving water stays workable, and everything opens by mid April. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Moose River follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. You can camp half a mile off, which suits an early start. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Snag Lake, 2.7 miles out.
