Full sun on the water today, with barely a breath of wind with a softening glass. Expect most activity at Lake Mendota around the calm side of the wind. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Within Dane County, Wisconsin, you have Lake Mendota. Land around it is rolling bush. It covers about 15.3 sq miles, which means weather matters as much as tactics. There is roughly 31 miles of bank, and each arm behaves like its own water. Among the waters listed for Dane County, none is wider. Maple Bluff lies 2.2 miles from the water. Shorewood Hills is 2.3 miles away, with Madison at 2.4 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
The basin has been measured to about 83 feet. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name brown trout, common carp and bluegill. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Read Lake Mendota before you fish it and the day goes better.
Temperature averages peak at 71°F in July and bottom out at 16°F in January. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. The open-water window runs from around early April to about early December in an average year. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. On Lake Mendota that shapes the whole year.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Being dammed, it draws down in some seasons and fills in others. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lake Wingra at 3.5 miles is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Lake Mendota in what we hold.
