Not a cloud worth mentioning today, with dead-still conditions and pressure ticking upward. The productive water at Buffalo Lake will be around sheltered bays and points. The useful hours run the day. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Buffalo Lake is listed under Ashland County, Wisconsin. The surroundings are rolling bush. Surface area is around 192 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The edge runs 3.0 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Size puts it in the front rank of our Ashland County list. Little Round Lake is the closest place, 24 miles off. Hayward lies 28 miles off, Park Falls another 29 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Ashland County: rainbow smelt, yellow perch and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Buffalo Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Between January at about 9°F and July at about 66°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Buffalo Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A protected area covers this ground, which usually means restrictions on access. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Muskie Springs Lake, 0.7 miles away. None of that is settled for Buffalo Lake in what we hold.
