A cloudless sky and strong light today, with a light SSW breeze and pressure easing off. Activity on Briar Lake should centre on bays that hold the day's warmth. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Briar Lake falls in Polk County, part of Wisconsin. It lies 1,014 feet above sea level. Small at around 11 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Our Polk County list holds plenty of bigger water. Frederic sits 9.4 miles from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Luck at 13 miles and Shell Lake at 18 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name brown trout, rainbow trout, northern pike, largemouth bass and bluegill. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Briar Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 69°F, while January sits near 10°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. From about early April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Expect Briar Lake to follow that timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Baker Lake at 0.4 miles is the sensible second choice.
