Flat light and a covered sky today, with the surface near flat and the barometer heading up. On Lavista Lake, work reed fringes and open pockets first. The numbers single out the evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lavista Lake is one of the Whitman County waters in Washington. The water sits 1,732 feet up. Surface area runs to about 21 acres — small enough to read in one session. Supplies mean a trip to Colfax, 24 miles off. It is 39 miles to Spokane, the nearest city. Near neighbours include: Alkali Lake 2 miles, Egg Pond at 2.3 miles, Tule Lake 3 miles, Pine Tree Pond at 3.1 miles and Rock Lake 3.3 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Whitman County, recorded fish include Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and Coho salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Lavista Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages here run 69°F at the top of summer and 31°F at the bottom of winter. Some winters cap it and some do not. It is not guaranteed from one year to the next. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. Lavista Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Launching is possible: a slipway lies half a mile off. The nearest mapped parking is half a mile away, so the last stretch is on foot. There is a toilet block some half a mile out. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Alkali Lake sits 2 miles off and takes the overflow. What applies at Lavista Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
