Rain colouring the margins today, with hardly a ripple anywhere with a firming glass. The fish at Avalanche Lake are likely to sit near the weed line and any gaps in it. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Night
Look for Avalanche Lake in Kittitas County, Washington. This is rolling bush country. At 2 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Kittitas County list. Tanner sits 20 miles from here and is the nearest stop. Beyond it, Riverbend at 20 miles and Wilderness Rim at 21 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Open biodiversity records for Kittitas County list cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and Chinook salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Avalanche Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect August to average close to 56°F, with January the cold end at about 24°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Avalanche Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Iceberg Lake at 0.7 miles is the nearest alternative. For Avalanche Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
