Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a whisper of wind from the S as pressure slides. The fish at Lake Cohoon are likely to sit near the seam between weed and open water. The productive run goes morning through afternoon. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

In Virginia, Lake Cohoon belongs to City of Suffolk. Around the bank it is oak and grass. At 371 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. There is roughly 3.5 miles of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. By size it stands out even at Virginia level. Start from Suffolk, 3.9 miles down the road. After that come South Suffolk at 4.1 miles and Windsor at 6.5 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. City of Suffolk records list bluegill, redfin pickerel, tessellated darter, blue catfish and chain pickerel among the fish reported. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Lake Cohoon the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages move between 39°F in January and 78°F in July. No part of the year shuts this water. October and November give a second good stretch as it cools. Spring and autumn carry the year; summer squeezes it into the ends of the day. That is the shape of the year on Lake Cohoon. The week either side of a change of season often fishes hardest.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Murphy Pond at 1.4 miles is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Lake Cohoon in what we hold.
