Blue sky from bank to bank today, with a kind WNW breeze on the water and the barometer heading up. Fish at Hale Lake should hold close to points where shallow meets deep. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Hale Lake stands in Grayson County, Virginia. Mixed woodland runs right down to the water. At roughly 4 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It sits higher than most water we list in Virginia. Rural Retreat sits 9.3 miles from the bank. Then Atkins, 12 miles, and Marion, 15 miles. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. Built water gives depth close in, which suits a bank angler. Grayson County records list kanawha darter, appalachia darter and fantail darter among the fish reported. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Hale Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Climate normals give 69°F for July and 31°F for January. A lid forms in a hard winter only. It is not guaranteed from one year to the next. The cooler months are the comfortable ones to fish here. Hale Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out. Cool nights slow the mornings but sharpen the evenings.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Rural Retreat Lake sits 7.5 miles off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Hale Lake in what we hold.
